Popular sleep apps, examined more carefully.

These first reviews cover different buying decisions. We explain who each app may suit, the limitations of the evidence and what to check before paying. Inclusion is not a ranking or a guarantee of better sleep.

What do you want the app to do?

Help me wind downExplore Headspace for guided content or Calm for bedtime listening. Try the actual voice and format.
Provide background soundCheck the sound itself, playback controls and timer before buying a large subscription. Our sound guide also covers non-app options.
Notice patternsRead the Sleep Cycle review or start with a simple diary. Treat estimates as context, not a diagnosis.
Get help with ongoing insomniaOur sleep therapy guide explains care options. A general wellness subscription is not automatically a sleep-treatment programme.

Five checks before you subscribe

  1. Purpose: Can you name the feature you expect to use? A bigger library is not necessarily a better fit.
  2. Real cost: Check your country, billing period, full renewal amount and cancellation route. A free download is not a free subscription.
  3. Device behaviour: Verify screen-off playback, downloads, timers or alarm settings on your phone. Features can vary by platform and plan.
  4. Privacy: Read permissions and current data practices, particularly before allowing bedroom audio recording.
  5. Evidence: Separate a company's feature description from a clinical study, and both from a personal preference.

Choose content before bedtime if browsing tends to become distracting. An app should earn its place by being useful, not by creating pressure to complete a streak.

Start without another subscription.

Explore a comfortable breathing cue, use our sleep journal prompts, or build a simpler routine with Sleep Reset. Our Sleep Tools hub also links to free InnerCalm tools.

These are educational resources, not treatment replacements. Choose the smallest tool that fits the problem you can describe; buying an app is optional.

How to read these reviews

The articles use official product information and explicitly cited clinical sources where relevant. They include original purchasing checklists and editorial judgments, with AI-assisted writing. We have not completed hands-on app testing or awarded star scores. Where evidence is limited, commercial or based on an older version, we say so.

App links in these four articles are ordinary, non-affiliate links. Other parts of Bedtime Cues may contain disclosed affiliate links. Read our editorial policy and affiliate disclosure.

An app is not a sleep assessment.

If sleep difficulties persist, affect daytime functioning or involve concerning symptoms, seek individual professional advice. Visit Guided Support to understand the next steps.
